Keyword Ownership?

Did you know (people talk) you can now eliminate all your competition in every single search engine?

The companies that are selling this sales pitch are the ones that are trying to pick up where Microsoft left off.

Microsoft used to have an ad program where you could purchase a keyword, and when someone typed that keyword into the address bar, they got taken to your site. The problem with this is that almost no one types a keyword into the address bar, they type a URL, or they search from a search engine. Microsoft couldn't make the system profitable enough to be worthwhile, so they dropped it.

Now, other companies are picking up the same idea, but with a major difference. Whereas MS's version of the progrm worked by default on all IE browsers, the new companies rely on folks to download a brower plug-in that makes this work. So, not only are you relying on the chance that someone will type a keyword into the address bar, you are also counting on them to download a special program to make it possible.
